Moparfest 2010- Wrap up Report – Sept 26th, 2010

Outdoor Car Shows can suffer with reduced show vehicle and spectator attendance, when overcast skies and on / off rain drizzle set in. The Moparfest weekend on August 21-22nd was such a weekend, with the constant threat of rainfall. Saturday was such a day with light occasional rain – but never enough to chase people away.

Surprisingly – the vehicle and spectator attendance was actually up higher then any Saturday of the past. Sunday was overcast all day as well, but there was no rain in New Hamburg until after the show was over. People were telling show organizers that it was raining at many locations surrounding the show but somehow New Hamburg was spared.
This surrounding rain did keep spectator attendance down slightly on Sunday, but the total for both days was that same as last year.

When the weekend was over the Show Vehicle count total was 1596, while the Spectator count, Show Vehicle people, Vendors, and all other sponsors and staff totaled over 19,000.

The "Automotive weekend" some call it started with the New Hamburg Board of Trade presenting their annual downtown street cruise on Friday evening. It was the biggest cruise ever with wall-to-wall people on the main street until dark.

Saturday morning a line up of show vehicles had developed before 7:00 AM to enter the show field. The cars just kept coming until over 1000 vehicles were the show field, the highest Saturday turnout ever. All of these vehicle owners were entered into the Saturday Elimination Draw, which was $5000.00 cash, as presented by the Mopar Canada and the 11 local Chrysler dealers. The last person standing of the 10 names drawn was Mike Edwards of St. Clements, Ontario who took home the cash.

Both days had their traditional Engine Blow Contests, and the Firebirds 50-50 draws. The Saturday 50-50 winner took home $4,450.00 and was almost in shock, but ecstatic.
At the conclusion of the show on Saturday, almost 200 of the show vehicles cruised over to Wellington Motors in Guelph for the annual "smoke show". Ted and Mike Woods indicated that a good time was had by all.

Sunday arrived as indicated earlier with threatening skies. But – all those vehicles that had pre-registered their show vehicles, all started to pile onto the show grounds, to be eligible for the drawing on the '79 Little Red Express Truck.

All of the Moparfest activities that make it a show for everyone were underway. These include the indoor arena display of highly restored or low production vehicles, that are all special in some way, over 240 vendors spots to go through, another engine blow, all day door prize giveaway's and several other draws staffed by local Wilmot Township groups.
New for this year was a Mopar Seminar given both days from main-stage by Hall of Fame Racer Herb McCandless who competed for Chrysler for years.

This man was such a wealth of knowledge and all he wanted to do is pass along a lifetime of racing secrets and experiences. You could see from his presentations and mannerism's that he loved doing this now that he has reached retirement.
He was kept busy both days after the presentations answering questions and signing autographs.

As the day drew on we had reached the time for the various draws. The 50-50 draw had reached $4,481.00 and was won by another Mopar enthusiast.

The New Hamburg Optimist reported what turned out to be the best season ever for tickets sales – and it was no wonder, as everyone wanted that 2010 Hemi Challenger. When the ticket was drawn, they called the winner by phone right from the stage, and because he was from Kitchener, he hung up the phone and tore out to New Hamburg in record time it seemed.
The wining ticket # 13,003 was Ron Astl of Kitchener.

Finally it came time to draw 10 names from the group of pre-registered show vehicle participants, so each could try a key - but only one would start the Little Red Express Truck. For the first time ever the first key pulled and started the truck - and it was Ron Monture from Ohsweken, Ontario that took it home.

Ted Woods of Wellington Motors made sure the remaining 9 participants tried their keys anyway – but only the first would start the truck. Immediately after, the 2011 Participant Giveaway Vehicle was unveiled. A fully restored Texas 1972 Satellite in Road Runner trim will be offered as the Participant Prize next year. The New Hamburg Optimist also announced their vehicle, which will be a New Challenger again. But – not just any Challenger, it will be 1 of only 100 vehicles sold in Canada called a "Mopar 10" that will be a collectors item the moment it rolls of the Production Line. Watch the site www. moparfest.com for a full description and picture of this special Challenger.

Finally the weekend had drawn to a close, and in spite of the weather, a total of $146,154.00 was raised for 15 local youth work or community service clubs. The official total is now over $2,000,000.00 million
that has been raised at Moparfest and related car draws and events.

The Moparfest Committee would like to say thanks to all show sponsors and supporters, and welcome everyone back next year for the 3rd weekend in August, when we present the 32 annual show and do it all again.

Kitchener Waterloo Record Article

2010 record pic

August 22, 2010
BY SARAH ANDERSON, RECORD STAFF

NEW HAMBURG — Lloyd Anderson has made a hobby of restoring cars since he was a kid.
A chef by trade, he doesn't have a formal background in mechanics.
Yet for the past 17 years he's been working, bit by bit, to restore the 1963 Dodge Panel he and his wife drove from Delia, Alta., to New Hamburg for Moparfest, the largest all-Mopar car shows in Canada.
Mopar is a term that has come to describe all Chrysler vehicles including Dodge, Jeep, Plymouth and others. It comes from the automobile parts and services arm of Chrysler, a conjunction of mo(tor) and par(ts).
Anderson guesses he's put over $30,000 into restoring the vehicle, which has oak cabinetry inside, hardwood floors, a two-burner propane stove, five-gallon water tank and can sleep two passengers.
He did all of the work, except the paint job, and said it's a continuing process.
"I do a little here, a little there. I just keep puttering away at it," he said.
The 67-year-old owns several other restored cars and has passed the hobby on to his daughter who has a restored 1974 Nova hotrod.
He and his wife have been on the road driving the old Panel — and towing a 17 foot trailer painted to match — since June 4. They don't expect to park in their own driveway again until after Sept. 21.
Every other summer they come out from Delia, which is just north of Drumheller, Alta., to visit family in Barrie and move between car shows.
It's the first time they've entered the car at Moparfest, which Anderson lauded as well organized and fun. He said he'd come across some familiar faces and friends he'd made at other shows around the province.
Not everyone is as gung ho about car shows as the Andersons, nor do they travel as far.
Jim Sherk, a retired truck mechanic from Ayr, said he finds the shows a bit boring when he's left sitting alone in his truck.
But when people come by to ask him questions, he's always glad he came.
He's brought his 1941 Dodge ½ Ton truck to Moparfest for the past four years.
The truck has all original Mopar parts and Sherk did all of the restoration, except the paint.
Back in 1955, Sherk and his brother were working on a farm in Saskatchewan driving the truck, which was old even then. After its owner passed away it sat outside for about seven years, deteriorating.
In 1997, Sherk's brother bought it and gave it to Sherk to repair.
"He thought it would be a good idea. I didn't at first," he said.
But within five years he had it road ready. He drove the truck without the box for a few years until he had completed the all-wood box with new wood.
"It's a very rare vehicle. There aren't many around," he said of his truck, which he said he'll never sell.
"Unless someone comes with a ridiculous price. Then maybe I'd consider it."
This year 1,084 cars preregistered for the show — the most ever according to Moparfest president Patt Scherster.
She said the number of cars that had registered at the gate Saturday evening was more than the total gate-registered cars in 2009 and she expected that total to go up on Sunday.
What Gary Hoffman started as a 14-car show in 1979, has grown to include more than 1,500 cars in 2009 and almost 250 vendors this year.
The event is more than just a gathering place for Mopar enthusiasts, it also raises money for local children and youth programs run by community organizations.
Through a 50/50 draw, vehicle draws and admission, the show has donated over $1 million to local groups since it began operating.
Check the Record online this week for an aerial view from this year's show.
