Moparfest 2010- Wrap up Report – Sept 26th, 2010 Outdoor Car Shows can suffer with reduced show vehicle and spectator attendance, when overcast skies and on / off rain drizzle set in. The Moparfest weekend on August 21-22nd was such a weekend, with the constant threat of rainfall. Saturday was such a day with light occasional rain – but never enough to chase people away. Surprisingly – the vehicle and spectator attendance was actually up higher then any Saturday of the past. Sunday was overcast all day as well, but there was no rain in New Hamburg until after the show was over. People were telling show organizers that it was raining at many locations surrounding the show but somehow New Hamburg was spared. When the weekend was over the Show Vehicle count total was 1596, while the Spectator count, Show Vehicle people, Vendors, and all other sponsors and staff totaled over 19,000. The "Automotive weekend" some call it started with the New Hamburg Board of Trade presenting their annual downtown street cruise on Friday evening. It was the biggest cruise ever with wall-to-wall people on the main street until dark. Saturday morning a line up of show vehicles had developed before 7:00 AM to enter the show field. The cars just kept coming until over 1000 vehicles were the show field, the highest Saturday turnout ever. All of these vehicle owners were entered into the Saturday Elimination Draw, which was $5000.00 cash, as presented by the Mopar Canada and the 11 local Chrysler dealers. The last person standing of the 10 names drawn was Mike Edwards of St. Clements, Ontario who took home the cash. Both days had their traditional Engine Blow Contests, and the Firebirds 50-50 draws. The Saturday 50-50 winner took home $4,450.00 and was almost in shock, but ecstatic. Sunday arrived as indicated earlier with threatening skies. But – all those vehicles that had pre-registered their show vehicles, all started to pile onto the show grounds, to be eligible for the drawing on the '79 Little Red Express Truck. All of the Moparfest activities that make it a show for everyone were underway. These include the indoor arena display of highly restored or low production vehicles, that are all special in some way, over 240 vendors spots to go through, another engine blow, all day door prize giveaway's and several other draws staffed by local Wilmot Township groups. This man was such a wealth of knowledge and all he wanted to do is pass along a lifetime of racing secrets and experiences. You could see from his presentations and mannerism's that he loved doing this now that he has reached retirement. As the day drew on we had reached the time for the various draws. The 50-50 draw had reached $4,481.00 and was won by another Mopar enthusiast. The New Hamburg Optimist reported what turned out to be the best season ever for tickets sales – and it was no wonder, as everyone wanted that 2010 Hemi Challenger. When the ticket was drawn, they called the winner by phone right from the stage, and because he was from Kitchener, he hung up the phone and tore out to New Hamburg in record time it seemed. Finally it came time to draw 10 names from the group of pre-registered show vehicle participants, so each could try a key - but only one would start the Little Red Express Truck. For the first time ever the first key pulled and started the truck - and it was Ron Monture from Ohsweken, Ontario that took it home. Ted Woods of Wellington Motors made sure the remaining 9 participants tried their keys anyway – but only the first would start the truck. Immediately after, the 2011 Participant Giveaway Vehicle was unveiled. A fully restored Texas 1972 Satellite in Road Runner trim will be offered as the Participant Prize next year. The New Hamburg Optimist also announced their vehicle, which will be a New Challenger again. But – not just any Challenger, it will be 1 of only 100 vehicles sold in Canada called a "Mopar 10" that will be a collectors item the moment it rolls of the Production Line. Watch the site www. moparfest.com for a full description and picture of this special Challenger. Finally the weekend had drawn to a close, and in spite of the weather, a total of $146,154.00 was raised for 15 local youth work or community service clubs. The official total is now over $2,000,000.00 million The Moparfest Committee would like to say thanks to all show sponsors and supporters, and welcome everyone back next year for the 3rd weekend in August, when we present the 32 annual show and do it all again.
